Web Application Firewall is a type of firewall that is used to protect Web applications. While the direct proxy server protects the client computer's authentication through an intermediary, WAF deploys itself in front of web applications (in reverse proxy mode) and analyzes bi-directional HTTP / HTTPS traffic - detecting and blocking malicious traffic. WAFs are not the ultimate security solution, but rather intended to be used in conjunction with other network perimeter security solutions, such as next-generation firewalls (NGFWs) and intrusion prevention systems (IPS).
